A Stationary Blog

By Ashley Dace

This 30 day period of geographing has a stationary theme; mills, engines and buildings being the main subjects.
A few industrial sites ticked off the list and a few more which I don't have time for can be done over Easter/next year.
So I left off at Strumpshaw and Ashby St Mary in late July.

Gressenhall was first, this workhouse museum far exceeded expectations. A nice summer day also made photography pleasurable. Inside the stationary exhibit was the main interest, especially the hurst frame.
The farm was a wonderful sight and I would love to see the ploughing day.

An afternoon was spent at the Lydia Eva (first visit 2010), shame it wasn't the week after when she was in steam.

The 2nd Sunday of August saw the start of the 'Sunday Trilogy', I had work late in the evening leaving me the day to visit far away places!
Ashdon Windmill, Essex was first. Past through Haverhill, should have bought a ticket!!
Bartlow tumuli and Bartlow signal box were visited on the way to Swaffham Prior before a rather bumpy fen road took me to Stretham for the beam engine. An excellent day.

The third Sunday was in Cambridgeshire again, riding to Houghton mill to visit the NT property. Making the use of NT membership I have just bought. Back through Cambridge to retake pictures of the pumping station where my others from 2011 were a little poor for my liking.
Sadly I could have done Bardwell ploughing/threshing day and possibly Prickwillow pumping station but time was against me.

This BHM weekend was spent at two locations, firstly Essex. Thorrington tide mill was excellent and it was nice seeing this area of the country. A quick hop up the Colchester for Bourne mill was taken, its OK, nothing special apart from possibly the pit gearing. Didn't cost me anything apart from a few miles for the detour so nothing lost.

Monday was spent at Repp's wind engine park, some interesting pumps and various other machinery. Glad to got it done. Also nice to have a picture of the Holmes engine on Geograph. Was going to do Thrigby postmill nearby but couldn't in the end.
