Geograph-ers exploring Glasgow's Merchant City

By Rudi Winter

On the day after the Geograph AGM 2019 in Glasgow, a group of Geograph-ers met for a guided walk of the Merchant City. Our tour guide was local fellow member Richard Sutcliffe LinkExternal link , who led us through the grid pattern of the area and explained some of its architectural features, occasionally referring back to Tony Lewis's talk at the AGM the day before.

We started at George Square NS5965 : George Square and the City Chambers, Glasgow by Rudi Winter, following down Buchanan Street to the arch at the entrance to the Merchant City at the rear end of the Gallery of Modern Art. We continued east, alternating between Ingram Street and Wilson Street to see the City Chambers NS5965 : John Street and City Chambers, Glasgow by Rudi Winter, Hutcheson's Hall NS5965 : Hutcheson's Hall, Hutcheson Street, Glasgow by Rudi Winter and some buildings that had been converted to adapt to modern uses NS5965 : Brunswick Street, Glasgow by Rudi Winter. After a stroll across Ramshorn Graveyard, we saw murals of sport events of the 2014 Commonwealth Games NS5965 : Commonwealth Games mural "Badminton", Wilson Street, Glasgow by Rudi Winter and of wildlife scenes before passing by the Babbity Bowster pub, where the Geograph meet had begun two days earlier. A slight detour took us to former church St Andrew's in the Square NS5964 : St Andrew's in the Square, Glasgow by Rudi Winter, now a centre for scottish music and dance NS5964 : St Andrew's in the Square, Glasgow by Rudi Winter. From here, we walked down to the River Clyde and the McLennan Arch at the entrance to Glasgow Green NS5964 : McLennan Arch, Glasgow Green by Rudi Winter, with the City of Glasgow College NS5964 : City of Glasgow College by Rudi Winter and the Central Mosque NS5964 : Glasgow Central Mosque by Rudi Winter on the opposite bank. Following the north bank, we reached the suspension footbridge across the Clyde and returned to near the start via Buchanan Street.
