City squares in Glasgow Hillhead, Kelvingrove, Anderston, Blythswood, Gorbals

By Rudi Winter

This is my walk back to the hotel after meeting other Geograph-ers at the ran Mr, a church-turned-foodie pub in the Hillhead area in northwest Glasgow. As my hotel was in the Gorbals, that gave me an opportunity to collect a few squares while walking back on the evening of the latest sunset of the year.

I started by walking down Byres Road NS5667 : Byres Road, Hillhead, Glasgow by Rudi Winter to the remnants of the former Western Infirmary, where the erstwhile Tennant Memorial Institute of Ophthalmology NS5666 : Former Western Infirmary, Glasgow by Rudi Winter awaits redevelopment. Turning towards Kelvingrove with its museum NS5666 : Kelvingrove Museum, Argyle Street, Glasgow by Rudi Winter, I followed the path along the southern edge of Kelvingrove Park NS5766 : Stewart Memorial Fountain, Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow by Rudi Winter, then along Clairmont Gardens NS5766 : Clairmont Gardens, Glasgow by Rudi Winter and Elderslie Street NS5766 : Somerset Place Mews, Glasgow by Rudi Winter. Here I discovered both the Hindu NS5766 : Hindu Mandir, La Belle Place, Glasgow by Rudi Winter and Sikh NS5765 : Singh Sabha Gurdwara, Berkeley Street, Glasgow by Rudi Winter temples of Glasgow and, later, a pyramid-shaped church NS5765 : The Pyramid at Anderston, Glasgow by Rudi Winter which had been converted into an independent community centre.

Here I returned to Argyle Street, which runs all the way from Kelvingrove in the west to Trongate in the Merchant City in the east. However, it is brutally cut in half by the M8 NS5864 : M8 Kingston Bridge across the Clyde, Glasgow by Rudi Winter, and I followed its former alignment underneath the tangle of motorway bridges NS5865 : M8 junction 19, Anderston, Glasgow by Rudi Winter and ramps NS5865 : M8 junction 19, Glasgow by Rudi Winter. To my surprise, Anderston Station NS5865 : Anderston Station, Glasgow by Rudi Winter is in the middle of the messy motorway junction 19.

I soon reached the River Clyde, with a look along the Caledonian Railway Bridge NS5864 : Caledonian Railway Bridge, Glasgow by Rudi Winter leaving Glasgow Central station, then took the suspension footbridge and followed the southern riverbank NS5864 : Unstable river bank, Gorbals, Glasgow by Rudi Winter back to my hotel.
