Carrigafoyle Castle
Carrigafoyle Castle
This 15th century tower house stands on a rock close to the Shannon Estuary, guarding the approach to Limerick. It is famous for the siege in 1580 when English forces were attempting to dislodge Gerald Fitzgerald, Earl of Desmond during the so-called Second Desmond Rebellion. Its fall heralded the beginning of the end for Desmond, because his other supporters began to surrender once this stronghold had been lost.
