Samson or Goliath?
Samson or Goliath?
A view of the massive gantry crane 'Samson' at the Harland and Wolff Heavy Industries complex in Belfast. One of two gantry cranes over the H&W building dock, the other nicknamed 'Goliath', it was constructed for the yard in 1974 by the German engineering firm Krupp. The crane stands 106m tall, has a span of 140m and can lift loads of up to 840 tonnes to a height of 70m. Although designed for the purposes of shipbuilding, H&W are no longer involved in this industry and are now concentrating on offshore renewable energies contracts as well as ship repair and servicing.
