Goldmines River, Co. Wicklow
In the late 18th Century gold was discovered in this river. Peasants abandoned the fields to pan for gold until the military stepped in. In all it is thought more than 200kg of gold were found in the space of a few years but, despite extensive trenching of the adjacent hillsides, the 'mother lode' was never found.
