The Bilingual 'Banjo' Bannon Stone

This stone outside the Townhall commemorates the 2003 Everest climb of Terrence 'Banjo' Bannon. Bannon a Newry lad and a working class hero has conquered a number of Himalayan peaks including K2, climbing the hardest routes with the minimum of equipment and without the aid of Sherpas. The use of Irish on the stone is a reminder that into the second half of the 19thC the Newry area was a stronghold of the language.
