Damer House, Roscrea
Damer House, Roscrea
Across the courtyard of the castle is the Queen Anne style Damer House, built by John Damer as a family residence in the early C18, although it appears they only lived there for a short while if at all. It eventually was turned into an army barracks housing 110 men in 1798, and after a mixture of uses during the C19 and C20, it became derelict sometime after the mid-1950s. After being scheduled for demolition in 1973 it was eventually saved by the vehement opposition to its destruction by local heritage groups. After restoration is completed, it is destined to become a major tourist attraction alongside the castle.
