Town wall, Fethard, Co. Tipperary
Fethard was founded c.1200 by a Norman lord, probably William de Braose. The town walls were built from 1292 when permission was granted by the King. They were necessary because of the increasing lawlessness in Ireland. The original walls were probably of wood, as another grant, specifically for stone walls, was made in 1376. The Church of Ireland church of the Holy Trinity is safely inside the wall, and to the right are two ruined medieval houses.
