Tintern Abbey, Co. Wexford
Tintern Abbey, Co. Wexford
The abbey was founded for the Cistercians in the 13C by William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke and Lord of Leinster. The Monks came from Tintern Abbey in Monmouthshire. After the dissolution, the abbey and lands were granted to Anthony Colclough of Staffordshire, and he progressively converted the abbey church into a mansion. The abbey was inhabited by the Colclough family until 1959, and soon after that it was taken into the care of the State.
