Derby Industrial Museum - grasshopper beam engine
Derby Industrial Museum - grasshopper beam engine
Grasshopper beam engine of 5 horsepower with a slide valve cylinder 9" bore by 20" stroke. Built about 1850 by the Derby born engineer George Fletcher to power machinery in his London workshop. In 1863 it was moved to his new Masson works in Litchurch Lane, Derby where it worked until 1911. It was put on display at the Museum in 1975 and restored to steam in 1993/4. It usually runs on one day a month but the museum is closing for an unknown length of time at the end of March and the engine's last run for the foreseeable future may be late February.
