Broxbourne Station, with Down Diesel-hauled express
Broxbourne Station, with Down Diesel-hauled express
View SW, towards London; ex-Great Eastern Liverpool Street - Cambridge main line. The station had just (11/60) been rebuilt (100 yards north of the earlier station, Broxbourne & Hoddesdon) when the line was electrified as far as Bishop's Stortford and Hertford East. On this wet November day, the 12.20 Liverpool Street - Kings Lynn express is passing, hauled by No. D5547, one of the numerous and successful Brush Type 2 1,250hp A1A-A1A Diesels (later Class 31) introduced in 10/57, which by 1960 dominated the GE-line express trains. Withdrawn since 2007, as Class 31/4 No. 31461 fitted with electric train-heating equipment, it is preserved on the Battlefield Line, Shackerstone.
