A satellite photo show this as a triangular site of about 10 hectares — perhaps a soiled-over domestic refuse tip? A Wikipedia article on the nearby village of Wootton refers tantalisingly to a pit for brick clay that was filled with ash, but it has not been possible to identify the site from old maps.
