G9493 : Ice-smoothed outcrop

taken 13 years ago, 8 km WSW of Commeen, Co Donegal, Ireland

Ice-smoothed outcrop
Ice-smoothed outcrop
This glen has a thick covering of peat over boulder clay in most parts, but in this area rock outcrop breaks the surface at the roadside. Ice from the glacier that formed the glen has plucked away loose rock and with its abrasive bed-load it has smoothed the outcrop. The rocks here are metamorphosed sediments belonging to the Argyll Group of the Dalradian, but they are not well exposed.
