Pen-y-Gwryd Hotel
The Pen-y-Gwryd Hotel will forever be associated with the first successful ascent of Everest in 1953 when this hotel was used as a base for members of the expedition whilst training. On 29 May 1953, Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest. The news of their successful ascent was announced in Britain on the morning of 2 June, the day of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. Speculation continues to this day as to whether George Mallory and Sandy Irvine reached the summit, only to perish on their descent almost 30 years earlier in 1924.
