King's Cross - Newcastle express approaching Durham station across viaduct
Viewed SE, towards Ferryhill, Darlington and the South on the ECML, the line is on the viaduct over the lower part of the city, SW of the Station. The 09.40 King's Cross - Newcastle is conveying through coaches to Tyne Commission Quay for passengers for Scandinavian sailing; it is headed by Gresley V2 2-6-2 No. 60963 (built 1/43 as No. 3675 (No. 963 from 1946), withdrawn 6/65).
An interesting(?) point about Durham Station is that the grid line on the latest OS maps seems to run directly through the centre of the building while your 1940 edition shows it clearly in NZ2642, so technically there is just as much NZ2742 in David Hawgood's photo as NZ2642! Perhaps you should show it in both...
