War grave, Bonamargy Friary
One of the war graves located at Bonamargy Friary, Ballycastle. The graves all date from World War One and contain the bodies of sailors lost from the ships HMS 'Racoon' and HMS 'Viknor' - the site at LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) gives some excellent information on both ships. This grave is of an unknown sailor lost on 'Racoon'.
Bonamargy Friary, Ballycastle

Bonamargy Friary in Ballycastle LinkExternal link . It was built close to the mouth of the Carey and Shesk rivers by Rory MacQuillan in 1500. The rival MacDonnell clan fought for and claimed the friary from the MacQuillans in 1588. The cloister, gatehouse, altar and church are well preserved except for the thatch roof. There are many interesting features including the east window, a staircase and a sealed burial vault. The coffins of several Earls of Ulster and chieftain, Sorley Boy MacDonnell, lie within. The graveyard also contains a number of war graves as well as many from local people buried here over the past few hundred years.
