Castles of Munster: Glenogra, Limerick (1)
These are the remains of a castle built c.1400-18 by Thomas, 6th Earl of Desmond. Copied possibly from the Staffords castle at Newport in South Wales, as it also has octagonal corner towers on its river frontage. The existing remains consists of a substantial octagonal tower at the far end of this picture, linked by a curtain wall 10 feet thick to a second semi-octagonal tower seen here in the foreground. The wall continues beyond to form a rectangular enclosure having a plain pointed arched gateway on the south side. The castle was in a ruinous state by 1583, and afterwards granted to the Bourchiers, later earls of Bath.
