The English text of the plaque reads:
"Famine Memorial
Erected to the memory of all those who died in the Cork workhouse during the great hunger
Famine Commemoration Committee 1997"
It is in memory of the victims of the famine in 1845 to 1851 following the failure of the potato crop. The population of Ireland was reduced from 8 million to 6.5 million through death and emigration.
Cork Workhouse is now St Finbarr's Hospital, see W6870 : St. Finbarr's Hospital, Cork.
