Athlone West signal cabin
Athlone West signal cabin
Athlone West was a standard Midland Great Western design. Officially “Athlone West Junction cabin”, it controlled the junction for the lines to Galway (foreground) and Westport/Ballina. Now replaced by CTC and the semaphore signals by colour lights.
Athlone railway station :: N0441
Athlone had two junctions. One on the eastern side of the Shannon where the Great Southern and Western (GS&WR) line from Portarlington (Dublin Kingsbridge – Cork line) met the Midland Great Western (MGWR) line from Broadstone (Dublin), via Mullingar and Moate. The other, on the western side of the Shannon, where the MGWR lines to Galway and Westport/Ballina diverge.
The GS&WR station on the eastern side opened in 1850 and closed in 1929 when all services transferred to the MGWR station on the western side. The building remained standing and in use as the goods office. With the reduction in service over the line from Mullingar (it closed in 1987) CIE renovated the GS&WR station which re-opened in 1985 concurrently with the closure of the old MGWR one.
