J2184 : Kilmakee level crossing near Templepatrick (2007)
taken 17 years ago, near to Templepatrick, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland
Kilmakee level crossing is an automatic half-barrier crossing, remotely monitored, on the Ballyrobin Road, Templepatrick - part of the main road from Belfast and the M2 to the International Airport at Aldergrove and also part of a cross-country route from Craigavon and points west to Larne. The crossing opened to road traffic on 31 October 1977 and is unusual in having a central reservation to prevent overtaking on the approaches. There was already a level crossing called “Kilmakee” a short distance away. It was renamed “Kilmakee no. 1 and this one called “Kilmakee no. 2. When the road over no. 1 was abandoned no. 2 became simply “Kilmakee”.
