Taymouth Castle
The first castle on the site was Balloch Castle built in 1550 by Sir Colin Campbell. Robert Mylne prepared plans in 1789 but only a new bridge was actually built. The 1st Marquis of Breadalbane demolished Balloch in 1799 leaving the William Adam wings of around 1733 still standing and built the now Category A Listed Taymouth Castle early in the 19th century. The cloistered colonnade and corner towers date from 1806 and were built by James and Archibald Elliot. The east wing was pulled down and re-built in 1818-19 and further extended in 1823 by architect William Atkinson who remodelled the west wing in 1825. Further west wing modifications were carried out by J Gillespie Graham in 1838-42 with interior work by Pugin. The golf course in the grounds was one of the 200 or so courses designed or re-designed by James Braid after his retirement from professional golf in 1912. The building fell in to disrepair until bought by the Taymouth Group Ltd who started a £74m restoration to a 150 room luxury hotel with 26 timeshare properties in 2005. Unfortunately work stopped late in 2006 and in March 2009 administrators KPMG were called in. The 425 acre estate was sold to London based Meteor Asset Management who announced in January 2011 that the redevelopment would be put on the back burner. A press release in late 2011 gives an opening date of summer 2012 but by 2016, enough work had been completed at the castle for it to operate as an events centre. Work stopped in April 2018 over concerns about ownership and a possible connection to money-laundering. American developer Discovery Land Company was however, later, able to finalize a deal to assume ownership but future plans were unclear.
