The "Enterprise" at Newry (1984)
Newry was served by the 10¼ mile Warrenpoint branch (1854-1965) from Goraghwood J0631 : Goraghwood station near Newry. It also had a station on the Dublin- Belfast line which opened in 1855 and closed (with the Warrenpoint branch) in 1965. Variously named “Newry”, “Monaghan Road”, “Newry Main Line” and “Bessbrook” it re-opened, in response to public demand, in 1984 as “Newry”. This is the station, two months after reopening with the 15.00 Dublin – Belfast “Enterprise” (075 & 6 AC coaches) calling. The station was re-built, after some consideration about alternative locations, on the same site, opening in 2009 J0627 : Passengers waiting for the north-bound Enterprise.
When re-opened in 1984 it was thought to be too distant from the town but considerable subsequent suburban growth meant that it’s now merged with the rest of Newry.
