The Roe railway bridge near Limavady
The railway opened between Coleraine and Limavady Jct, across the estuary of the River Roe, in 1853. The present bridge (485ft in length), of reinforced concrete, was completed in 1938 to a design by the railway’s own civil engineer NC Cain. The train is a ten car “80”class set working the 08-18 Belfast Central – Londonderry “Derry Day” special. There was another special at 07.35 from Portadown for the Portadown and Lisburn Apprentice Boys. With the two specials and the strengthened 08.35 down service train there were thirty “80” class vehicles in Londonderry at the same time. During such times of heavy traffic, temporary block posts, using flagmen and detonators, were established on the single line sections - in this case at Dunloy and Bellarena.
The flat, partly-reclaimed land, with inter-tidal mudflats, is typical of this part of north Londonderry.
