Shonegawna Castle: view from the summit
Shonegawna Castle: view from the summit
This image shows the remains of the perimeter wall of the motte and bailey castle.
The view takes in the River Moy and Burren Hill (centre) and the Nephin Range in the distance. In the foreground can be seen the remains of the perimeter walls and the (now dry) moat.

Shonegawna Castle (Siadhan na Gamhna-the Fairy Mound of the Calves)

It possibly started out as a crannog in ancient times and possibly taken over by the Normans (probably Jordans) in the 12/13 century as it seems to have been converted into a motte and bailey. This would have been before the Jordans got around to building nearby Ballylahan Castle.
