Ballintubber Castle
Ballintubber Castle was built in the 13th century by Hugh O'Conor and became home to the O’Conor clan. No exact date of construction is recorded but it is referred to in 1311 when a man named Grindelaeh is recorded as having died there. A stone in the north-west tower records it being rebuilt in 1627. It is the earliest remaining example of an Irish built stone castle, built at a time when all other fortifications were constructed elsewhere in timber. The 1889 Journal of the Royal Historical and Archaeological Association of Ireland records that in 1642 the Irish forces fled back to the castle and the Parliamentary army were not allowed to follow up the victory and the castle and lands remained in the hands of the O'Conors until 1652. By decree on 4th August 1677 'The castle, bawne and lands of Ballintubber' reverted to the possession of the O'Conors. Charles O'Conor was the last to reside in Ballintubber in the first half of the 18th century and after he left, the castle probably then fell into ruin. In 1790 the castle and estate was purchased by Maurice Mahon of Strokestown House for £3,507 15s 6d. During 2008 a geophysical survey was conducted by The Heritage Council and established that ancient structures were previously located within the castle grounds.
