The "Albion" factory, Belfast (1990)
The “Albion” shirt factory was established in 1896. The building in the photograph, entered from Wellwood Street (right), was completed in 1909 to a design by Watt and Tulloch. The company prospered but the UK manufacturing operations succumbed, in the mid-1980’s to the growing trend to seek a lower manufacturing cost base outside Northern Europe. After a spell in Morocco, business is now carried on in Bangladesh, Vietnam and the People’s Republic of China. The building was subsequently demolished. This view, from Ventry Street, became available, for a short time, before the construction of a new office building on the Gt Victoria Street site (middle). J3373 : The "Aurora" site, Belfast shows a similar view in May 2007. Some of this information came from the company’s website LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) . For a similar view in 2014 see J3373 : Park House, Belfast (September 2014).
