NS9160 : Railway lines, branches and twigs
taken 18 years ago, near to Fauldhouse, West Lothian, Scotland
Railway lines, branches and twigs
In the middle of the picture can be seen a 3-car diesel unit train en route from Edinburgh to Glasgow Central. It is just passing the former Benhar Junction, whence a branch once ran to Polkemmet Colliery near Whitburn. Although the track on the branch has been removed, the grey ballast is still quite clear,
sweeping round from the train and out of the picture in a cutting below the dark green shrubs. From the left-hand end of those shrubs another former branch can be seen curving round to the right and forming a dam to water draining off the hills; this served a large colliery that straddled the former Lanarkshire and West Lothian boundary. About halfway down the left side of the picture a cutting can be seen; this took a short branch into Braehead Quarry. Finally, just above that a patch of grey ballast can be seen spreading left into an area previously occupied by three dead-end sidings used for storing unneeded coal wagons.
