SO9063 : The Volunteer Droitwich canal

taken 12 years ago, near to Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire, England

The Volunteer Droitwich canal
The Volunteer Droitwich canal
The Volunteer is a model installation of the last Wych barge.

These barges were designed to sail from Droitwich down to Gloucester via the River Severn and onto Bristol and the ports of the Bristol Channel, with salt from the surrounding salt works.

There is a plaque nearby explaining about the volunteering work done by the Droitwich canal trust in getting the Droitwich canals restored and opened in July 2011.

Taken from the water on my Narrowboat, the wall with mooring bollards is needed as there is a swing bridge at either end to stop and negotiate.
