Former lightship, Ballydorn
The former lightship 'Petrel' which is now used as the headquarters of Down Cruising Club LinkExternal link at Ballydorn on the shores of Strangford Lough. Built in Dublin in 1911, 'Petrel' was last used at the mouth of the River Blackwater in County Wexford. Following her withdrawal from service by the Commissioners of Irish Lights she was sold to Hammond Lane Foundries, Dublin in 1968 and was very nearly scrapped; luckily a deal was done and she was brought here instead.
