Newtownards Model School

“Model schools” were non-denominational State-run primary schools intended to serve both as schools and as training places for teachers. The first was established in Dublin in 1834. The Newtownards school, on the Scrabo Road, opened in 1862. The architect was Frederick Darley of Dublin. The style is that of a Jacobean house embellished by many decorative features including a tower, finials and fancy chimneys. A very impressive building in superb external condition especially in view of its age.
