The Scottish Provident Institution, Belfast
The Scottish Provident Building was built between 1897 and 1902. A triumphant finale to the Victorian era it announces its greatness over more than half of Donegall Square West. It is so rich in architectural detail that it would warrant its own book. Alas the late Sir Charles Brett in the “Buildings of Belfast” (1967) dismissed it as “terribly heavy . . . with a nauseating marble group in a pompous aedicule” – pshaw!!!
