G6173 : Mucros Head

taken 10 years ago, 3 km from Kilcar, Co Donegal, Ireland

Mucros Head
Mucros Head
This is the most exposed part of the headland, facing straight towards the southwest whence come some of the most violent storms. The sea has cut the sandstone back to leave a wave-cut platform, and it has carved out a series of big caves. Note that the foreshore has been swept completely clear of loose blocks; these have been deposited on storm beaches on the north side of the headland.
