A mile long flue connected this chimney to the lead smelting mill in Langley. Its purpose was to carry the poisonous fumes from the smelt mill by natural ventilation. The Langley smelt mill was built in 1768 for the Greenwich Hospital for Seamen to process their ore from mines on Alston Moor.
Fascinating landmark in lovely surroundings. Have also created a profile page for it too at the Fabulous North - Stublick Chimney with further pictures.
