Taken when the rhododendrons are in full bloom. This is believed to be the highest concentration of rhododendron plants in Ireland - they have completely taken over the valley sides and are growing year by year, completely obliterating local flora and fauna.

Earlier, on the afternoon this picture was taken, mountain rescue had to be called out to rescue an experienced and well equipped pair of walkers who had become hopelessly lost in the thick rhododendron forest. Such was the severity of the rescue that it made national television news. The rescue took several hours and required a boat to transport the rescued couple across the lake.
