Poppies can be found growing on a wide range of soils but they prefer light, calcareous soils. Poppy seed, which is produced from July onwards, can remain viable in the soil for many years. The Common poppy was introduced into Britain along with agricultural crops at least as far back as the Late Bronze Age.
