The R639 passing under the M8
It intrigues me that it was considered cheaper to build a long tunnel on the axis of the R639 rather than a diagonal bridge on the route of the motorway. I wonder for how long the lighting in the tunnel will be maintained!

Before the M8 Dublin to Cork motorway was opened (the adjacent stretch in July 2008), this was the N8, which explains its high standard for a Regional (class R) road. As there are no tolls on the adjacent section of the M8, the R639 carries little traffic and it is now a pleasure to drive along it.
