Head of Gairloch to mountains of Shieldaig Forest, 1957
View southward from the A832 near Gairloch Hotel to the SE end of the sea-loch. There, not quite visible, is the Shieldaig Lodge Hotel and Shieldaig village. just above it the small peak of Sidhean Mor (738 ft.). Confusingly, another Shieldaig village is 12 miles further south as the crow flies, the other side of the Shieldaig Forest mountains: these dominate the background and include Baeishven Bus Bheinn (2,860 ft.) and Beinn Alligin (3,232 ft.). [Additions and corrections are welcome!]?
The natural amphitheatre in which the Gairloch golf course lies is called 'Leabaidh na Ba Baine' (Bed of the White Cow). It was here after the religious Disruption of 1843 that Free Church services were held by those who had broken away from the Church of Scotland, preferring preachers who spoke Gaelic.
