Slochd Summit, with banking locomotive 1948
View southward, towards Aviemore, Perth and the South, from a Down express for Inverness which this engine had banked up from Carr Bridge. It is ex-Highland Railway class C 'Small Ben' 2P 4-4-0 No. 14398 'Ben Alder' (built 7/1898, withdrawn as No. 54398 in 2/53 and stored for intended preservation that never occurred and it was scrapped in 1967). On the left is the A9 Perth - Inverness main road. There was no railway station at this isolated spot (1,394 feet up): the house on the left was not a station and appears to have disappeared subsequently. [Further information welcome]
