This statue, which stands just in front of Inst in College Square East, is of Dr Henry Cooke (1788-1868) a clergyman who became involved in politics. It is commonly known as “The Black Man” although, strictly speaking, this nickname belongs to the previous statue (of the Marquis of Belfast) on the site J3374 : Statue, Belfast City Hall. May Street Presbyterian church was built in 1828/29 to a design by one W Smith. The minister was the Rev Henry Cooke J3374 : The Black Man, Belfast. Charlie Brett described it as “a really handsome Palladian example of the Presbyterian taste for the solidly classical. . . the memorial doorway to Dr Cooke, for whom the church was built is uncommonly good of its period, was designed in 1872 by John Boyd”. Another source describes it thus “A fine classical church of red brick with stucco dressings” but puts the doorway at 1870.
