SE3694 : Grooved stones inside the porch of All Saints Church

taken 9 years ago, near to Northallerton, North Yorkshire, England

Grooved stones inside the porch of All Saints Church
Grooved stones inside the porch of All Saints Church
Very rough vertical grooves on just two courses of stones.
The same courses of stones around the west end and north side have some stones marked in the same way.
Someone suggested : "These are probably relics of arrow-sharpening during archery practice, once compulsory after Sunday service and therefore similar marks are found on walls of a number of medieval churches."
