From the internet: "In 1984, vehicular ferry operations were withdrawn from the crossing. The diesel-electric vehicular ferry (nicknamed "HMS Back & Furrit" by users) that had operated since 1952 was replaced by two motor launches supplied by William McCrindle & Son of Ardrossan. The new ferries, the Renfrew Rose and Yoker Swan, were primarily intended for foot passengers but could, in an emergency, accommodate fire engines or ambulances.

On the final night of diesel-electric operations, thousands queued patiently for one last trip on the ferry. By midnight, when the sailings ceased, everything on board that was moveable had been taken by souvenir hunters!"
