Scattery Island (Inis Cathaig), Co. Clare
Scattery Island is a small uninhabited island, of about 180 acres, in the mouth of the River Shannon, near the town of Kilrush in the south west of County Clare. It used to be populated but the last people resident there left in 1978. The island is best known for its religious remains and in particular the remains of the monastery founded by St. Senan, who is thought to have been active on the island from around 534 AD until his death about ten or so years later. The island also has the remains of an artillery battery, an Irish round tower and a lighthouse, which has been fully automated since 2002. At one point in the 19th century, there were about two dozen houses and the ruins of many of these remain. There are some very limited facilities for visitors, with limited opening, and access is by a ferry service from Kilrush Harbour.
