In 1940 the threat of a seaborne invasion by German forces from the west using neutral Ireland as a base was a very real one. Amongst the fortifications that were constructed all along the Welsh coast were those at Fairbourne where it was anticipated the threat was most severe. In response to this threat as many as 650 concrete anti-tank blocks were built on the beaches here between Fairbourne and Barmouth.
