Fireplaces in Castlewigg House
Looking up from the lower ground floor - "below stairs".

The original building was an L-plan tower house built in 1595 for Archibald Stewart of Tonderghie and his wife Helen McKerlie; it was extensively altered in the 18th century for Captain John Hathorn who was married to Catherine Maxwell of Monreith Estate, daughter of Lt.-Col. Sir William Maxwell of Monreith, 5th Bt. and one of Gavin Maxwell's (of Tarka the Otter fame) forebears. In 1922 the house was purchased by Major John Pender and he still owned it when it was destroyed by fire in 1933. In 1954 the roof was removed to avoid taxes and the interior of the house dismantled and this is how it looks today.
