WWII Hampshire - RAF Beaulieu airfield: pundit code letters
RAF Beaulieu's wartime airfield identification letters "BL" can still be seen today located in front of where the control tower once stood. Known as a pundit code, they enabled airborne aircraft to identify the airfield they were flying over. For night flying operations they were supplemented by Pundit Beacons using red lamps that automatically flashed the two-letter Pundit Code in Morse.

Update: the latest Google Earth imagery show that the letters have deteriorated markedly in their visibility since the above photo was taken. A much better GE image of 2014 is provided for comparison. The faint rectangular outline where the control tower once stood can clearly be seen behind the pundit code letters:
