TL2799 : Welcome to CambridgeshireTL2799 : Welcome to CambridgeshireWelcome to CambridgeshireThis modern sign announces the boundary of the post-1999 administrative county of Cambridgeshire which is entered here on crossing the River Nene from the City of Peterborough unitary authority. It is also the boundary between the parishes of Thorney (now part of Peterborough) and Whittlesey (Cambridgeshire) .
From 1974 to 1999 Peterborough was administered as a district within Cambridgeshire though before that it had been a largely self-governing part of Northamptonshire (the Soke) and then for a few years joined forces with Huntingdonshire.
At the 1965 reorganisation the parish of Thorney was transferred from the Isle of Ely to the new county of Huntingdon & Peterborough, at the same time that most of the Isle amalgamated with Cambridgeshire. Though not part of the old Soke of Peterborough, it has remained under the control of first Huntingdon and now Peterborough.
