Pillbox (unclassified): DoB ID: S0003143
This pillbox is just one of two such surviving structures in Blandford, this one being rather unique in having been built on top of the reinforcing wall of a 280 metre long anti-tank ditch (not apparent in this photo). The pillbox is in a private garden, and overlooks Crown Meadows, a former deer park, an area of open ground between the river and the anti-tank ditch on the western side of the town. Targeted by artillery and heavily mined, the meadows were intended to be a tank "killing ground" in the event of hostilities. Unfortunately there is no contextual view of the meadows today from the pillbox due to the overgrown foliage in front of it.
