Airfield Battle Headquarters/Infantry Command Bunker: DoB ID: e11365/S0012739
Moving north along the public FP I came across this structure that looks like an ordinary pillbox, but it is not. This was the Battle Headquarters from where the airfield defences would have been coordinated in the event of attack by enemy forces. This is not a conventional airfield Battle HQ by any means; for instance there are only two rooms in the bunker, and both are equipped with loopholes and frames for Turnbull machine gun mounts instead of observation slits. It has also been called an Infantry Command Bunker, so may have served a dual purpose. Seen here is the above ground view of the south face of the structure with its two loopholes that belies its true height, most of which lies below ground.
