Defended Building: DoB ID S0000475
In 1940 this outbuilding and former carriage shed was converted into a defensive position by constructing a rectangular shaped pillbox inside whilst at the same time preserving the building's external appearance. The four walls were strengthened internally with an infill of concrete faced with brick, giving an overall thickness of some 50 cm. Completing the construction was the addition of a concrete roof and floor, openings for embrasures in three of the walls, and an entrance protected by a low wall on the northeast side. The brickwork on the SW face appears to have been replaced during the conversion when a concrete lintel was inserted over the embrasure, and the exterior face covered with wooden planking. The brickwork on the SE side however is original, with the embrasure on that side simply a cut-through opening.
